Sian Reese-Williams: Being in Holby City has saved me during lockdown

ICONINSIDER — Sian Reese-Williams says starring in ‘Holby City’ has “saved [her], mental health-wise” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The 39-year-old actress portrays Jodie Rodgers in the BBC medical drama, and she admitted the role has been “a gift” and has “couldn’t have come along at a better time” as the UK has been in lockdown due to the virus.
She said: “‘Holby’ has really taken me back to the camaraderie of my ‘Emmerdale’ days actually, and playing Jodie has been a gift.
“Truthfully, I was really delighted to be working during lockdown, and I’m not ashamed to say that it really saved me, mental health-wise.
“I know all sorts of people who have been struggling in many ways recently, and I was certainly one of them.
“‘Holby’ couldn’t have come along at a better time for me.”
During the first national lockdown, which started in March last year, the former ‘Emmerdale’ star – whose character Gennie Walker was killed off in 2013 when she was in a car crash and then suffocated by evil character Cameron Murray (Dominic Power) – admitted she did question why she had left the ITV soap.
She said: “There were times during that first lockdown where I was like, ‘God, why did I have to leave ‘Emmerdale’?’ [laughs].
“That said, I love the variety of the job, and it’s certainly been the best thing for me – so I’m grateful to ‘Emmerdale’ that they threw me down a hill and suffocated me.”
Sian admitted she cried “every day” for nine months after she had decided to depart the Dales.
She added to Inside Soap magazine: “When I decided to leave, it was suggested that Gennie would be killed off – and ‘Emmerdale’ gave me the option to change my mind and stay.
“I still decided that I wanted to move on, as it just felt right – and in the nine months between then and actually leaving, I cried every day!
“I was sad, and I was terrified.”
