Vernon Kay’s ‘hideous’ model plane crash

ICONINSIDER — Vernon Kay has recalled a “really traumatic” incident when he when he crashed his model plane perilously close to a group of people.
The 47-year-old television presenter panicked when his plane came down near a group of bystanders, but fortunately everything was OK and he got his confidence back when someone lent him a plane to fly five minutes later.
He recalled: “I crashed this plane. It was hideous, it was an awful crash because it landed near some people which could have been really traumatic.
“When you fly radio control airplanes, when you crash one and you crash one really badly they say the best thing you can do is get in the air as soon as you can so that you don’t let those nerves affect your flying. And when I heard that I was like ‘OK’.
“Everything was alright. I am a member of the British Model Flying Association, so I was insured. Everything’s legitimate. Someone said, ‘Someone lend him a plane, get him up in the air.’ So I was up flying again within five minutes. It kind of flushed everything out your system.”
Vernon has also revealed his ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ co-star Beverley Callard taught him a lot about coping with depression.
Speaking on ‘Paul McKenna’s Positivity’ podcast, he added: “It’s important if you get into a glitch … a dark space. Seek help and try and elevate yourself out of it as quickly as possible I think. I learnt a lot from Beverley Callard.
“She suffered from depression really badly. She had electric shock therapy for her depression because it was severe and so bad.
“I admire the way she dealt with it and spoke about it, there are ways out these dark rooms we find ourselves in. It is possible to get out and see the light.”
